New Chemical Entities

New chemical entities, also referred to as new molecular entities, are novel pharmaceutical agents that do not contain active chemical moieties previously approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The preparation and study of these new molecular compounds represents one of the most important areas of research in the pharmaceutical industry in the pursuit of the next generation of therapeutic agents.

Once a new chemical entity has been synthesized it may be tested for pharmacological activity in clinical trials. Many companies and other research organizations involved in this industry own or license proprietary technologies to support their drug discovery research as well as collaborations and alliances with other institutions. These organizations often employ multidisciplinary teams including researchers from the bioengineering and analytical, structural, computational and combinatorial chemistry fields.
